Professor of Surgery and Chief Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery HCA Miami, Florida
Regenerative medicine is part of most medical practices today, including oral and maxillofacial surgery. This involves the safe harvesting and use of stem cells and progenitor cells to regenerate bone and promote healing Today, easy-to-use and safe harvesting methods of osteoprogenitor cells and stem cells are available and can be accomplished in the office setting or the operating room without the necessity of a centrifuge. These five-minute procedures will be demonstrated as well as their use to regenerate useful bone for common oral surgical procedures such as ridge augmentation, sinus augmentation, cystic defects, clefts and continuity defects.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Identify the common sites for stem cell harvesting.
Demonstrate use of osteoprogenitor cells and stem cells to regenerate bone in needed areas after trauma, tumor, cystic defects, and elective surgeries such as ridge augmentation.
Utilize regenerative medicine safely in their practice.
Compare regenerative medicine techniques to existing techniques for bone regeneration so as to appreciate the reduction in morbidity, time and expense.
Determine the best indications for regenerative medicine in their practices.
