Despite many advances in diagnosis and treatment, osteomyelitis of the jaws still presents a significant challenge to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The disease management is complicated with the development of resistant microorganisms and the improper initial management by different specialties. OMSs play a significant role in the surgical management of osteomyelitis. In this presentation, the pathogenesis of the osteomyelitis of the jaws will be discussed with an explanation of the current classification system of the disease. The disease's medical and surgical treatments and the current recent advances in diagnosis and surgical planning also will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss and understand the pathophysiology of the osteomyelitis.
Explain the current classification of the jaws osteomyelitis and discuss the appropriate treatment for each class.
Discuss the different types of imaging and the optimal modality in early diagnosis of jaw osteomyelitis.
Discuss the contemporary antimicrobial therapy and the best route of administration.
Explain the challenges associated with the reconstruction of the jaw's defects after osteomyelitis.
