Management of a maxillofacial surgery’s patient airway can be complex. Pathology, trauma or co-morbid factors can make routine intubation impossible. An understanding of airway anatomy and surgical airway techniques is paramount for safe treatment of these patients. This session will give an overview of anatomy and surgical techniques for airway access. It also will discuss pre-operative evaluation of patients and post-operative complications.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Differentiate techniques for airway management and how pathology, trauma or co-morbid factors can affect these choices.
Evaluate a patient and determine which airway management technique is appropriate.
Describe the airway anatomy and surgical airway techniques.
Discuss the potential risks and benefits of surgical airways.
