The use of TMJ alloplastic joint reconstruction has been validated, and the demand has increased over the years in adult patients as the procedure becomes more reliable. This is a result of the predictability of successful subjective and objective outcomes and increased quality-of-life of patients. However, the procedure is very technique-sensitive, and the outcomes are strongly related to the experience of the surgeon. Thus, not many oral surgeons feel confident performing this procedure, and only a few centers can provide this service efficiently and with clinical competence. The purpose of this session is to share the key steps for proper patient selection, planning, surgical pearls, postoperative management and management of complications for a successful and predictable outcome.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to:
Discuss the importance of proper patient selection for alloplastic TMJ reconstruction.
Describe our protocol for planning an alloplastic TMJ reconstruction with or without concomitant orthognathic surgery.
Identify and apply surgical pearls for a successful and predictable outcome in TMJR.
Describe the postoperative management for patients that underwent alloplastic TMJ reconstruction.
Recognize the most common complications associated with alloplastic TMJ reconstruction and discuss how to manage them.
